October 2, 2017 Spokane to Bozeman

What are we nuts??

Departure time is 8:20 AM. 46 degrees. Hmmm.  As Jim says, “It’s all part of the adventure”.

We are a caravan of 3ish.  Two out front and one getting a little later start.

We settle in.  How can we ever tire of the outstanding beauty of North Idaho?  Soon we skim in and out of 3 states in an hour and a half.

Montana speed limit = 80MPH. Not gonna get there pulling a trailer, but nice to go as fast as we can.

We lose an hour as we switch to Mountain Time.  We’re watching for other RVers who might be as crazy as we are and there are quite a few.

Montana in the fall provides birds flying south, a pop of orange among the green trees with a rare touch of red, cattails turning to fluff and horses chasing a herd of deer across a field.

We have a cold lunch (in more ways than one) at the Grant-Kohrs Ranch. The flag flies at half-mast, reminding us of the Las Vegas shootings. Glad to be far away and alone in an empty parking lot.

We encounter rain and some snow flurries just west of Butte (just high altitude rain). We drive right through the dripping clouds and out the other side.

Clouds are caught in tree branches and nestled into mountain tops. The majestic Rockies push into the clouds, just below the cloud curtain, a dusting of snow. And there are the Montana icons: the Big Stack, Our Lady of the Rockies, and billboards for the Testicle Festival,

The Clark’s Fork gives way to the Gallatin.

It’s snowing when we stop for the night. Nonetheless salmon gets grilled outdoors and we have a cozy feast indoors.

We stay next door to the Bozeman Hot Springs and can’t pass up the opportunity to take a soak in the natural hot springs since we are so very close. We slip and slide over in the snow and find a locker, (they charge and we didn’t bring any $$ so we leave our stuff unlocked).  The indoor pools, ranging in temperature from 59 to 106 degrees, are nice and warm, but the building is old and dumpy. The outdoor pool, however, is wonderful: hot water, dark sky and snowflakes dampening our hair. No towels (see the no $$ comment above), so we drip dry and slip and slide back to the trailer.

What? Are we nuts? I guess so, but in a Lewis and Clark kind of way.

Happy Birthday Jenny!
